Organize your home. In many places it’s tradition to start the new year with a clean, organized house but if you’re anything like me, you struggle with keeping it clean the rest of the year. Home cleaning and organization are often made easier with extra help. Professional cleaners and organizers can give us an outside, unbiased perspective about the spaces we see and use every day, a perspective built by their experience and expertise. We have gathered together some advice and ideas from Colchester’s top residential cleaners and organizers to help you get and stay organized any time of year.

Everyone has at least one space in their home that has just become too overwhelming, and we just don’t know where to start. This time of year, we are all full of motivation to get control of our spaces, be that workspace, living space, or creative space. The unfortunate result of clutter is that it drains us of energy and stifles creativity and productivity.

My name is Kristin and I love to bring light to my client’s homes and lives through decluttering, organization, cleaning, and space design. I can help you assess your space and how best it might be organized for your desired use. I identify organizational tools and equipment (bins, labels, etc.) that might best help you make the best use of, as well as maintain the space. We collaboratively determine the items that bring joy and happiness and cull the excess that no longer fits in your life.

I will haul away items to the dumpster while items that can be repurposed and used are dropped at local donation drop offs. Taking this off the hands of clients is helpful as these items often end up sitting somewhere for long periods of time and just defer clutter to another space.

I can do one space or multiple spaces, depending on your time and budget. Clients are often involved at several points in the process and once complete it provides tools and encouragement to take on other spaces.

These pictures are from a craft/art area project that was slowly collecting this and that, which resulted in the client finding her creative energies feeling stagnant. This job took 7 hours with organizing bins purchased from Canadian tire.

There are two pictures, one above the other. The top image labeled "Before" with a messy, disorganized desk and shelves covered in art supplies and crafting materials. The bottom image is labelled "After" with the same desk and shelves organized and clean with a clear workspace, all of the materials appear to be organized and accessible.

Do you feel overwhelmed looking for clothes in your closet? Are the kid’s toys driving you bonkers? Do you feel exhausted looking for items in your kitchen like Tupperware lids and bottoms? Do you feel anxious when you go into your garage? If you answered yes to any of these then it is time to ORGANIZE, but with organizing comes PURGING. Yahoo!!

If you are brave enough to tackle this process on your own, that’s awesome. My advice is to start small; that way you don’t feel overwhelmed, angry, cry or just give up! Start with something as simple as a kitchen drawer or bathroom medicine cabinet. Starting small is a good way to stay focused and build yourself up for bigger projects; the toy room, your closet and then you can even tackle the basement!!

As I mentioned before, when it comes to organizing you need to start by purging. This means pulling EVERYTHING out of the drawer/cupboard/closet. And I mean everything! This way you can go through each item and decide whether to keep it or let it go. Things to keep in mind when deciding this:

Have I used it within the last 6 months? 1 year?
Does it fit?
Do I need 10 of the same thing?
Do I like It?
Does it have a home?

If you answered no to any of the above questions then it is more than likely time to let it go. Keep in mind to donate items you don’t need when possible. Once this part of the process is done then you can clean the area (because what’s the point of putting things back if it’s dirty) and then start putting things back into the space. Keep like items together and use bins and baskets to keep things contained. It’s also a great idea to label the baskets, that way the whole family is aware of your plan. I like using clear containers as much as possible, especially in the pantry. It makes it easier to see when it is time to restock an item.

When it comes to memories, I like to designate a nice storage box for these items. Each one of my kids has a decorative box that I store their memories in. I picked something large enough so items can be added throughout their school years. This is also a great idea for adults with pictures, medals, and other awards if you aren’t able to display them.

Keep in mind organizing doesn’t necessarily have to be storing things in cupboards and drawers alone. It could be creating a hanging display to showcase your medals from races, shelves to display your Alexander Keith’s collection in the man cave or a china cabinet to showcase your china collection. Not everything needs to be hidden.

If you think organizing is just for people that want things to look pretty…. you’re partially right but it’s also for people that want to be happier in their living and work spaces. You will have more free time since you will know exactly where everything is and it will save you money since you won’t be buying doubles of items since you can visually see what you have. Organizing does take time and effort but once you get in the routine of it, it will seem like second nature.

I would recommend calling in a professional when you become too overwhelmed and just want to give up. It is not worth your sanity to try and tackle it alone. Having someone to talk you through the steps and be a sounding board can do wonders. A professional can see things and make suggestions you might not think of. They look at a space and instantly can see what the space can become. They can help you stick with a budget that you may have. By working with a professional, the key word is with. It is your home and together WE can make it work for you!

It's normal to want to start something new with a clean slate. The same goes for your home. So, why not start off 2023 feeling refreshed, re-energized and organized?
Image of an organized under-sink area with labeled white baskets containing cleaning supplies and a set of 6 small drawers.
Text to the right reads Evaluate the Clutter
What type of item(s) is causing you and your family the most grief? Whether it's time spent cleaning, looking for things, constantly moving items from one junk drop-off to another etc. Is it mail and keys; children's toys; clothing and laundry; dishware; charging cords, and electronics?

Evaluate the clutter, and determine what needs to go and what needs a home. Narrow down the items that need re-organizing and dedicate a specific place for these items. Make it a habit with you and your family to put these items back when finished.

Below that on the left, text reads Build a Command Center
A command center is a designated area in the home where you can keep a family calendar and everyone in the family's important information, homework, to-do lists, and more—think of it as your family record of where everyone needs to go and what they need to get done. This place is also a great home for mail, keys and school notices so you spend less time looking for things. Ensure your command center is set up in a place easily accessible and unavoidable in your home. Image to the right is a wall with a black rectangle. In the rectangle space is a calendar, an envelope with paper sticking out, a small roll of craft paper and a hanger with 4 hooks. One hook has a small wooden paddle, another hook has a houseplant in a hanger.

Below and to the left more text reads Start in the Closet
Is your closet full of clothes you no longer wear; you can't find what you need; it's so jam-packed that your clothes get wrinkled; spending countless hours doing the kids’ laundry for things they only wore a few hours? Sound familiar? Now might be a great time to whip your and your family's wardrobes back into shape.

Reset the "Junk" drawers
We all have at least one, but do you have more than one “Junk Drawer” in your home? Empty all the "junk" drawers in your home, and compact them down to one. Determine the best home for this “junk”. Is it near the front door where dropped items accumulate, or should it be near that countertop you're constantly cleaning up by hiding all the stuff in drawers?
Get the Family Involved
Ensure everyone in the home is on board with the new standards. Involve your kids and reward their decluttering actions. Enjoy the newly cleaned spaces together in a positive manner (boardgames night, baking, movie night, going through old family photos, enjoying the items re-found in boxes of clutter). These small changes will influence their future decluttering and cleaning habits in their own adult lives.

Declutter
Put on your brave face, and dedicate each week to eliminating an item in your home that you haven't used, needed or thought about in at least two years.
