Located at 604 Prince St., the NovelTea café is one of Downtown Truro’s local gems. After a devastating fire in September 2020, the original NovelTea location had to be re-established, and the new home just happened to pop up right across the street. Now, you can enjoy your daily coffee within the comforting walls of a stately old home, decorated to fit NovelTea’s cozy aesthetic. Although their original home was lost, much love was found in the new home, including a new, full-sized bakery where they can bake all of their sweet treats fresh for the incoming community every day!
The NovelTea team is passionate about their customers, coffee, and community. Showing and spreading local love is one of their highest priorities – by serving Nova Scotia roasted coffee and espresso not only do they interact and serve the community, but they get to support local businesses as well. By partnering with 7 different maritime roasters, NovelTea has certainly made a name for itself in the coffee community!
Their expansive collection of beverages and treats is bound to have something that you love. For drinks, you can find a wide variety of hot and cold beverages, including drip coffee, loose leaf tea, lattes, chai lattes, Italian sodas, cold brew and more! CAFE 311
Café 311 is a new addition to the local businesses of Colchester. Bought on May 1st, 2022, the café, located at 98 NS Highway-311 in North River opened with the intention of serving and providing as many local goods as possible. From local coffee beans (46-Dartmouth) to local treats from Brookfield Bakery and Sugar Coated, a local gluten free bakery they have everything you need to start your day the right way.
With family connections to Brookfield bakery, as well as the new hair salon, Seastrands, in Downtown Truro, the entrepreneurial spirit was in the right hands to run this new project. In noticing that those coming from Tatamagouche or the highway didn’t have direct access to a local café when driving through, what better reason to open up a new shop right outside of Truro in North River! Plus, for those looking to escape the busy downtown area, Café 311 provides a place of solitude and peace.
If we’re talking coffee, their most popular drink is their brown sugar latte (iced or hot!). They also serve a variety of other coffee style drinks, starting anywhere from Americanos, Cappuccinos and lattes to espresso and drip brew, most of which can be served iced as well! If you’re more of a tea lover, they offer matcha, chai, dirty chai, London fogs and more, which can all be served hot, or iced. Don’t forget about the flavour shots! Looking for lactose free options? They’ve got oat milk. almond milk, coconut milk and soy milk!
They also sell local products, such as Philips’ honey and Kare Kombucha beverages. Plus, have you tried a woodfired bagel?! The flavours include rosemary, everything, sesame, and cinnamon sugar and can be toasted with butter, cream cheese, bacon, egg, cheese!! So many options!
Take everything to go, or to stay! Better yet, they even have a drive thru for true convenience.

However, this blend of coffee beans is unique to this brand, created specifically for them by the owner of Aroma Maya Coffee. They also offer many other coffee beverages, including americano, espresso, latte, iced coffee. Be sure to ask them about the option to add flavour shots or flavoured cold foam.
As for food, they’ve got an extensive menu with many original meals, most of which use local ingredients, such as meat from the Circle of Life Hobby Farm in Murray’s Sliding! Perfect for a good breakfast, or lunch, one of their most popular sandwiches is their breakfast Waffle sandwich – does it need much more explanation? Two toasted Belgian waffles with fried egg, bacon, sliced cheddar cheese and maple aioli. Not sure if that’s what you’re looking for? Check out the rest of their menu for variations of grilled cheese sandwiches, croissant sandwiches, burgers, paninis, and more!
